Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn: Text To Text
Have you ever encountered an old photograph of one of your parents? Well, when thirteen year old Ali is looking through her deceased grandmother's belongings in Ali's attic, she finds an old photo of her mom, Aunt Dulcie, and... someone who's been torn out of the picture. Her grandmother's writing is on the back saying Sycamore Lake, Gull Cottage 1977, Claire, Dulcie, T... Ali is asked by her Aunt Dulcie to come up to Gull Cottage with her and Ali's cousin, Emma to babysit Emma while Dulcie works on her art. Ali graciously takes the role as babysitter and spends the summer with her aunt. While Ali's at Gull Cottage, her and Emma meet a little girl named Sissy. She seems to be strange and has a horrifying secret. Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn is a scary, incredible book that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
When Emma and Ali met Sissy, this reminded me of Welcome to Dead House by R.L. Stine (a book in the famous Goosebumps series) because the main characters move to a spooky, new house and when they are walking around the neighborhood, mysterious kids are talking to them. Sissy, in the book, always keeps on happening to appear in random places wherever Emma and Ali go, which is what exactly happens in Welcome to Dead House. When the characters are walking to school, waiting at the bus stop, playing outside their house, strange children end up near their new house, asking them unusual questions.
Thoughts I had while reading were why does Sissy keep on asking Ali weird questions about her family? And why does Sissy always where the same faded bathing suit over and over again like the children keep wearing the same outfits in Welcome to Dead House? Many questions occurred to me while reading this mind-blowing book. And soon all of my questions were answered. If you want to find out, then read Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn.
